PA FM Al-Zahar visits Southeast Asia

Thursday, May 25, 2006 |

During a visit to the Islamic Asian nations, Dr. Mahmoud al-Zahar, the Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Minister, presented his new initiative on Wednesday urging all Muslims to contribute a dollar to the Palestinian Authority. This includes nations such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Al-Zahar will also be visiting China later this month with other representatives from Arab nations. “If every Muslim in the world would donate just one dollar a year, there would be enough money to finance the yearly budget of the Palestinian Authority,” al-Zahar said. The purpose of the visit was to stress the PA’s economic crisis since Hamas came to power. Iran has promised the Hamas government that if the economic distress continues it will help finance their activities. There are nearly 160,000 public servants in the Palestinian Authority, half of whom work in security and have not received salaries since March of this year.
