Government negotiates over removal of illegal outposts

Tuesday, May 30, 2006 |  Sara Fischer

The government plans on holding talks with the settlers Yesha (Judea, Samaria and Gaza) Council for a few weeks to discuss the evacuation of 24 illegal outposts in Judea and Samaria. If the sides are unable to reach an agreement, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is likely to order the Israel Defense Forces and Israel Police to evacuate the residents from these outposts. Three outposts slated for evacuation first, the Skali Farm, Arusi Farm and Hill 725 near Nablus, have suffered the most violent Palestinian attacks. Yesha Council members have already met with Justice Minister Haim Ramon and meetings with the prime minister are also in the works. “In his final days [as prime minister], Arik Sharon hated us,” Shaul Goldstein of Gush Etzion Regional Council said. “Olmert doesn't hate us yet. In his talks with us, he shows warmth and understanding.”
