Trial opened of Orthodox man who allegedly murdered son

The trial of Israel Valas, the 19-year-old accused of murdering his 3-month-old son, opened Monday at the Jerusalem District Court. The State Prosecutor’s office claims that Valas beat his son out of anger, which led to the child’s death. Sergeant Major Yuval Kaminitz from the Jerusalem Police was the first to testify. “I arrived and saw a father with a baby in critical condition, and he seemed indifferent to me,” he said. “This aroused my suspicion.” While defense lawyers in a rebuttal said the accusations about indifference were invalid, nurses said the baby was not neglected. Ultra-Orthodox Jews flocked to the streets in protest claiming his innocence.
