The Jordanian government has asked Israel to demolish an abandoned palace in Jerusalem intended for the Jordanian royal family as a place of residence. In 1966, the late King Hussein began constructing a palace, but plans were interrupted with the outbreak of the Six Days War and in 1967 it became property of Israel. The Jerusalem Municipality has destroyed several illegal structures and the Jordanian government asked them to destroy this one as well. The building, which was never completed but remains an empty shell, is used by local residents as a viewing point for Jerusalem vistas and fireworks. Municipality officials are in the process of taking steps to carry out the demolition.
