Public and religious schools in the Negev have, for a second consecutive year, sold their Bar Mitzvah candies and donated the proceeds to the children’s ward at the Soroka Hospital in Beersheba. “Operation Candies” began when 12-year-old Moshe Weitz realized his accumulation of Bar Mitvah candies were growing out of hand. He and his friends decided to sell their candies and earned 250 shekels ($55) going door-to-door and told Dr. Chai-Am they wanted to donate the money to the hospital. The initiative took off and Operation Candies 2 now involves the 5th and 6th graders from all the schools in Meitar.
