PM Olmert scheduled for Jordanian visit to calm Abdullah's fears

Thursday, June 08, 2006 |  Staff Writer
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will travel to Jordan on Thursday in an attempt to calm King Abdullah's concerns over his convergence plan and its effect on the Hashemite Kingdom. King Abdullah has expressed grave concern over the past few weeks that a unilateral withdrawal will likely undermine Jordanian security. Olmert is expected to reiterate his position and his commitment to conduct negotiations with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Problems that could arise for Abdullah if Israel unilaterally withdraws could lead to chronic unemployment, severe poverty and chaos leading to anarchy. Palestinians would seek to improve their living and could cross over the Jordan River in masses, changing Jordanian dynamics.
