HAMAS FM TO ATTEND UN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE MEETING

Thursday, June 08, 2006 |  Staff Writer
The Palestinians informed the UN of al-Zahar’s intention to represent the Palestinian Authority at the international conference that deals with, among other things, human rights violations, mainly by Israel, in the West Bank. It is known that al-Zahar is interested in exploiting the event in order to meet with delegates from all over the world, especially senior level commissioners of the UN Human Rights Committee as well as those of the UN Committee on Refugees.
Diplomatic officials estimate that if senior UN officials meet with al-Zahar, his participation in the event will constitute a “test case” in his attempt to launch representation of senior Hamas government officials at the General Assembly of the UN in September, in the framework of efforts of Hamas to break the front of international insulation against them.
Diplomatic officials have indicated that since the Quartet and the Secretary General of the UN have declared that contacts with the Hamas government will not be made until they accept the conditions of the international community, UN officials will not meet with al-Zahar whereby doing so would give legitimacy to a terror organization.
