Although Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres will turn 83 this year, the elder statesman has seemingly earned the degree of eternal youth of Israeli politics. Peres proved this a few days ago when he arrived at his home in the Ramat Aviv neighborhood of Tel Aviv only to find the elevator not working due to a power outage. His bodyguards wanted to bring in a generator to get the lift moving, but Peres insisted on taking the stairs to the 12th floor instead. Peres skipped up the 12 flights of stairs while his bodyguards followed him out of breath. When they reached his apartment, Peres asked his bodyguards if they were alright. The next morning Peres took the stairs again since the elevator was still out of commission. Perhaps Peres’ long and active life can be attributed to his healthy diet and his daily morning workout.
