Israeli Knesset (parliament) Minister Haim Ramon made a secret visit to Cairo on behalf of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert earlier this week to meet with the heads of Egyptian intelligence to discuss the prime minister’s convergence plan and the escalated fighting in the Palestinian territories. Ramon also wanted to discuss with Egyptian Omar Suliman Egyptian involvement and efforts to bring a renewed ceasefire in the midst of confrontations between Israelis and Palestinians. Ramon was very friendly with Suliman as this was not the first time he was sent in place of the prime minister to meet with Egyptian officials. Former prime minister Ariel Sharon also used Ramon’s services in Egypt. Ramon’s trip to Cairo came as a continuation of Olmert’s visit two weeks earlier.
