EU refuses to recognize borders

In a meeting with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni (l.) on Monday, Benita Ferrero-Waldner (r.), the Commissioner for External Relations of the European Union, said that the EU would not recognize borders Israel wishes to establish unilaterally. Ferrero-Waldner, in Israel for two days, is behind the EU’s new initiative that channels funds to the Palestinian Authority, bypassing Hamas. Israel has not yet agreed to this process of channeling funds nor on the issue of paying PA health officials’ salaries. Israel objects to paying these salaries, but is not opposed to providing all necessary health assistance in the form of supplies. While the EU is in the process of working out the details of this plan, Ferrero-Waldner is also expected to meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on this trip.
