Israel Navy foils smuggling attempt

Thursday, June 22, 2006 |  by Staff Writer

An Israeli Navy vessel opened fire early Thursday morning on two swimmers in the Mediterranean Sea attempting to smuggle weapons from Egypt into the Gaza Strip. The swimmers were hit by the gunfire after they were spotted in forbidden waters where smugglers have attempted to transport arms in the past. When the swimmers did not adhere to the navy’s instructions, warning shots were fired. The swimmers continued to ignore them until the sailors opened fire directly.
