Palestinian leaders meet

In a meeting between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas (r.) and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh on Saturday night, the two leaders failed to reconcile and find a compromise to the Palestinian prisoners’ document. Participants said the meeting was positive and that further talks would continue on Sunday. Points of dispute were Hamas’ recognition of Israel and support of a two-state solution because the Hamas Charter calls the destruction of Israel. Hamas did agree that Abbas would handle all negotiations with Israel. However, Fatah demanded that the Hamas government disband immediately. Palestinian Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat said he was not optimistic that the two parties would come to an immediate agreement.
