Rumsfeld to visit Israel

Tuesday, June 27, 2006 |  by Staff Writer

US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is scheduled for his first Israel visit this July since his appointment in 2001.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert invited Rumsfeld, the architect of the war in Iraq, to the Jewish state during his time with US government leaders in Washington a month ago.
Rumsfeld, 74, will be the most senior US official that has come to Israel since the Israeli elections. The US secretary of defense will meet with PM Olmert, President Moshe Katsav, Defense Minister Amir Peretz, Vice Premier Shimon Peres and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
During the meetings, state leaders will discuss with Rumsfeld the war on terror, the convergence plan, security cooperation between Israel and the US, the Iranian threat, and the continuation of Israeli involvement in American security venues.
