Egypt gives Hamas Sunday deadline

Sunday, July 02, 2006 |  by Staff Writer
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has told Hamas to respond to its proposal by the end of today to end the crisis over the abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. “President Mubarak spoke personally to Syrian President Bashar Assad and suggested he apply pressure on Hamas to agree to the proposal,” Palestinian sources said. “The proposal is that the Israeli soldier will be freed immediately and in return, Israel will release prisoners in the near future.” Assad told Mubarak that Hamas in Damascus had no connection to the kidnapping and that the decisions were made by the terrorists in Gaza. Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah called on Hamas to reject the proposal unless they were guaranteed something in return.
