Doctors believe Haredi baby was strongly shaken

Doctors who treated Israel Valas’ baby said the child was strongly shaken. Valas, the 19-year-old ultra-Orthodox father was arrested on suspicion that he murdered his child. In a testimony by Dr. Iren Enetva, an eye doctor at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, she said, “An eye check caused heavy suspicions, or even sharp evidence, according to the prosecution, for a violent shake of the baby.” The physician believes the child had gone blind before he reached the hospital. Professor Avi Rivkind, head of the Trauma and Surgery Department at the hospital, said the baby suffered from severe brain edema (an accumulation of liquids), which showed up during the night hours after the baby was admitted. Although Valas' attorney claimed the baby fell from a low height, there is clear evidence that a baby could not have suffered such severe damage from that kind of drop.
