According to Hamas leaders, it was reported that Khaled Mashaal, Hamas’ political chief in Damascus, said he supports Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh's call for a cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinians. Mashaal also supports a broad deal with Israel which includes the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in exchange for Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, an end to targeted killings and an exchange of Palestinian prisoners. However, according to Palestinian reports, Israel is unwilling to listen to Hamas’ proposals. Mashaal will hold a press conference late Monday and present his official stance regarding the release of Shalit.
