The Health Ministry has reported that since 2000, the number of women taking folic acid has increased 650 percent, which has significantly reduced the risk of neural disorders in babies. Approximately 34 to 39 percent of Jewish women and 26.4 percent of Arab women are using folic acid today. Folic acid reduces the risk by 70 percent of children born with neural tube disorders. In order for it work properly, women must take the pills daily before conception and critically during the first three months of pregnancy. Neural tube defects for every 1,000 births have dropped in Israel. Folic acid is found in fresh green vegetables such as spinach. It is also found in folic acid-enriched cereals and breads.
