A prime minister’s best friend

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert appears to be following in the footsteps of several American presidents: When the Olmert family moved into the prime minister’s residence, the family dog, Pita, came right along with them.

The Olmerts moved into the official residence closer to downtown Jerusalem about a month ago. Neighbors were surprised to hear the sound of barking emanating from the house.

During the day, Pita plays in the yard. In the evening when Olmert returns home, he turns his attention from affairs of state to canine and plays with the dog. Workers at the house also assist with dog duty when Olmert’s wife Aliza leaves the house.

American presidents are known for bringing their precious pets to the White House. President George W. Bush brought along Barney and Miss Beazley. His father, George H.W. Bush, had Millie and President Clinton was famous for Buddy.
