Israeli army enters central Gaza

Wednesday, July 19, 2006 |  by Staff Writer

Israeli infantry, engineering and armor forces moved into central Gaza overnight Tuesday as part of a wide scale operation to thwart terror and Kassam attacks and damage terrorist infrastructures.

During the night, five Israeli soldiers were wounded when a grenade was thrown at them. Israeli forces exchanged fire and wounded two terrorists.

Israeli air strikes in the northern Gaza Strip prevented attacks from occurring on Israel’s home front. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out aerial attacks against armed terrorists with anti-tank missiles. Tunnels used to smuggle weapons into Israel were also destroyed by the Israeli air force.

An Israeli army spokesman said that IDF operations are solely aimed at targeting terrorists and destroying their infrastructures. The IDF is doing everything in its power to avoid harming Palestinian civilians and working to bring kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit home in peace.
