The New York Police Department was able to find a torn Israeli flag among the wreckage of the WTC buildings which were hit in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The flag was one of the many flags displayed in the entrance hall of one of the buildings, representing the countries which had interests in the giant office buildings.
All remains of the wreckage were removed to a warehouse on Staten Island, where the authorities are working on locating the owners. An NYPD forensics officer was able to identify the Israeli flag because he was married to a Jewish woman. The flag was severely torn and dirty.
The NYPD quickly notified the Israeli Consulate General in New York about the find. Consul General Arye Mekel requested that the flag be handed over to the State of Israel.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered to repair and frame the flag in a glass casing. The historic flag will be presented to Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres who is on a public diplomacy mission on behalf of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
