Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told government leaders on Sunday that residents of the entire southern Lebanon region have been warned to leave the area.
Olmert said that Hizballah used the Lebanese village of Cana as a storage place for Katyushas and used the villagers as human shields. Israel said it warned citizens of Cana to leave, but 50 civilians were killed when Israeli missiles hit homes in the southern Lebanese village early Sunday. When those who remained were asked why they did not leave, they said that taxi drivers were charging $1,000 for a ride to Beirut, an astronomical cost, especially for residents of the small village.
Olmert added that while it is not Israel’s policy to kill innocent civilians, in the last 18 days Hizballah has fired thousands of rockets at Israel with the intention of killing innocent Israelis.
