Though not the first time, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for the elimination of Israel, saying during an emergency meeting of Muslim leaders in Malaysia that the only solution to the Middle East crisis was the destruction of the Jewish state.
"Although the main solution is for the elimination of the Zionist regime, at this stage an immediate ceasefire must be implemented," Ahmadinejad said, according to state-run television in a report posted on its website.
French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy quickly issued a statement criticizing Ahmadinejad’s call to destroy Israel days after he had labeled Iran a "stabilizing" force in the Middle East.
"I totally condemn these words," Douste-Blazy said on France-Inter radio. "Peace and security in Lebanon and its borders has to be preserved by the Lebanese government and people.”
Ahmadinejad called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Iranian-backed group Hizballah.
