Prime Minister calls for assertive public diplomacy

In a meeting held yesterday Prime Minister Ehud Olmert instructed Israel’s top spokespersons to take up an assertive line of public diplomacy and not be defensive in their message. This is the first time Olmert has met with this forum during the war.

Olmert also instructed the Israel Defense Forces to sanitize as much intelligence material as they can so Israel can prove to the world exactly what kind of strategic threat Israel is under and why Israel had to act.

Olmert said that the Israeli population’s steadfastness is amazing. “It stems from the fact that we were drawn into this conflict. There is a wide consensus and the population’s resolve is only getting stronger. It is truly awe inspiring. The IDF never promises something they cannot deliver. They never said it could destroy all of the missiles,” said Olmert.

In reference to the Iranian president Olmert said that the words ‘I want to destroy’ have not been uttered since Hitler. What is most surprising is that he is invited to participate in international forums and had never been asked to leave. He is a member of the United Nations and is calling for the destruction of another country who is also a member. That’s why we shouldn’t flinch,” said Olmert.

The Prime Minister also called on the spokespersons to expose the suffering of the Israeli civilian population and show more videos and photos of our destruction and the movement of the residents to the south. “Pain is not monopolized by the other side,” said Olmert. He added that the Hizballah fired 3000 rockets towards Israel with the purpose of killing civilians. Show me one time they fired on a military target.”

Olmert added that the legal advisor is sitting in on all meetings and makes sure we are within the bounds of international law. “Our sensitivity to civilian life on our side is incredible. Until the cabinet is convinced no civilians will be hurt, they do not authorize any action.” Olmert asked the spokespersons to show the media how the Hizballah are preventing Christians and Druze residents from leaving the villages of southern Lebanon. He also asked them to reinforce exposing Hizballah’s connection to Iran and Syria.
