Head of Israel Defense Force’s Operations Division Major General Gadi Eisenkot said in a briefing before the Cabinet that Israel had taken 20 Hizballah terrorists into custody since the beginning of the war. He also added that the IDF has increased its numbers close to the border in response to the heightened alert in Syria.
In response to questions from cabinet ministers, Maj Gen. Eisenkot clarified that Israel had communicated in several ways that there is no intention of attacking Syria , but there had been no response from their side. He also clarified that the Syrian alert is defensive and not offensive.
He added that since the beginning of the war, Israel has carried out 4,400 sorties, and that the IDF is continuing its offensive and is settling into a zone five to ten kilometers wide inside Lebanese territory. The IDF’s assessment is that there are still about 300 Hizballah terrorists left in that area.
“The IDF is now working on “sterilizing” the area from terrorists and achieving operative command. The instruction is to hit the terrorists and take prisoner anybody in the area. This will be the focus of the next few days,” said Eisenkot.
