Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres met with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington and thanked her for her efforts and achievements in Security Council Resolution 1701.
Peres said in the meeting that the Resolution is unprecedented due to the fact that for the first time the Arab states joined the condemnation against the Arab aggressor, Hizballah. In addition, for the first time Russia had joined an arms embargo.
Peres also mentioned the achievement in building a unanimous coalition of support from all Security Council members.
At the conclusion Peres added that the wide coalition must remain in order to examine the implementation of the Resolution, and that Israel will be a loyal partner in that effort.
Peres continued and said that although the fighting has ceased, the battle is still ongoing, including the reconstruction of the Galilee, the return of the kidnapped soldiers, and preventing an Iranian takeover of the Middle East.
Peres called Hizballah an Iranian commando division funded by Iran with more than $100 million a year, who are well equipped with the finest weapons and missiles, and are trained for months in Iran.
Peres asked the United States to assist in the return of the kidnapped soldiers. Peres also mentioned the reconstruction of Lebanon and said that it is the interest of all countries who oppose terrorism that the reconstruction will not be done by Iran, but rather by the West and moderate Arab and Muslim states.
