New immigrants flood Israel despite war

Despite unrelenting rockets hitting northern Israel, a flood of new immigrants arrived in Israel from the United States, Canada and England.

Greeting them at the airport, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told the immigrants that their arrival at this particular time is a great asset to the nation and is a show of solidarity with the State of Israel.

The war has not dampened immigration. The Jewish Agency said 2,700 new immigrants arrived in Israel during the month of July. About 1,000 came from Western Europe and 620 from North America. Despite the security situation, there has been an increase in the numbers of new immigrants from western countries during the months of January to July. During the first seven months of the year, 2,426 new immigrants arrived from Western Europe, compared to 2,226 during the same period the year before.

The number of immigrants from North America (USA and Canada) has also increased to 1,331 this year compared to 1,265 last year.

“There is no better answer to our enemies than the continuing stream of hundreds of thousands of Jews coming to strengthen the State of Israel,” said Zeev Bielski, chairman of the Jewish Agency.
