UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will arrive in the region early next week and will visit Beirut and Jerusalem. He will discuss the implementation of resolution 1701 and the formation of the multinational force.
UN envoy to the region Terje Larsen delivered the news about Annan’s arrival to Prime Minister Olmert during a meeting updating him on their talks in Lebanon and on progress in implementing resolution 1701.
PM Olmert said that the most burning issue currently is the unconditional release of the kidnapped soldiers as soon as possible in accordance with the UN resolution. Olmert also emphasized the importance of the quick deployment of the international force which will allow the withdrawal of the Israeli Army from Lebanon.
According to Olmert, the deployment of the force in the border crossings with Syria will allow Israel to lift the sea and air blockade from Lebanon and will help the implementation of resolution 1701.
The UN envoys also met with Ofer Dekel who was appointed by PM Olmert to head the Israeli task force dealing with the issue of the kidnapped soldiers.
