Olmert appoints Sheetrit as Acting Justice Minister

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert appointed Housing and Construction Minister Meir Sheetrit as Acting Justice Minister in place of Haim Ramon who was indicted for sexual misconduct for allegedly trying to forcefully kiss a female soldier.

Olmert and Sheetrit met yesterday and agreed that the appointment is only temporary until Ramon’s trial is over. Meir Sheetrit has served as Justice Minister in the past. His appointment does not require the consent of the Knesset. The two agreed that if Ramon is exonerated, he will get his job back, but if not, Sheetrit would become the permanent Justice Minister.

Since the formation of the current government, there was great tension between Olmert and Sheetrit surrounding his appointment as Housing and Construction Minister. Sheetrit saw himself a worthy candidate for Treasury Minister, which Olmert gave his close associate Abraham Hirchson.

On another government issue, Minister Jacob Edery (Kadima) is calling on PM Olmert to form an Emergency Unity Government to cope with the current regional and local crisis. In a letter sent to PM Olmert, Edery said that there must be a unification of all Zionist parties in the Knesset in order to fix all that is wrong with the Israel Defense Forces, to rebuild the north, and prepare for the looming Iranian threat.

Edery added that the current coalition is not functioning properly due to internal problems within the Labor party.
