Sources in Israel were quick to reject the claims of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad this weekend saying that Iran’s nuclear program does not threaten any country, not even Israel.
Ahmadinejad said the words during the opening of a new heavy water facility in the nuclear plant in the city of Araq, about 190 kilometers southwest of the capital Teheran. He clarified that Iran will not relinquish its right for a nuclear program. “Nobody can deprive a country of its right just because of its capability. We are not a threat to anyone, not even to the Zionist regime which is our enemy. Iran will defend its rights for a nuclear program forcefully if needed.”
Sources in the Israeli Prime Minister’s office responded and said that the words are deceptive. “We will not be deceived by the promises of the Iranian president who is only interested in avoiding sanctions by the international community,” the sources said.
Sources in the US said that this is an attempt to sabotage the efforts to create an international front against Iran in the Security Council. Meanwhile, the L.A. Times is reporting that the United States is already taking steps in case Russia and China veto a resolution imposing sanctions on Iran. In this case, the US will try to assemble an independent coalition that will impose its own sanctions on Iran.
According to the headline, the participating countries will freeze all Iranian assets and will impose trade sanctions against Iran.
This coming Thursday marks the end of the ultimatum that the Security Council gave Teheran to stop enriching uranium, in accordance with UN Resolution 1696. The US believes that Japan, along with the European troika (Germany, France, and Britain) will be the basis for the independent international coalition against Iran if Russia and China block the UN sanctions efforts.
The construction of the heavy water facility is an Iranian attempt, along with using centrifuges, to enrich uranium.
