Livni: Talks with Syria will complicate the situation

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said yesterday that it wouldn’t be right to renew talks with Syria at this time as it will only make things more complicated.

“Bringing Syria into the mix right now will only cause complications,” Livni said in a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Germany.

Livni added that “it is important to implement Resolution 1701, to find a way to go forward with the Palestinian process, and in the future, if conditions permit, we could start dealing with Syria.”

Livni had recently appointed a senior official in her ministry that would explore the Syrian route and the prospects of renewed talks with them.

The German Foreign Minister, however, is convinced that it is important to start talks with Syria right now.

Livni added that “the crisis in Lebanon will be resolved only when the kidnapped soldiers will be returned to Israel. Many Israelis wonder when they will be returned. As far as we are concerned, as long as the issue of the kidnapped soldiers is not resolved, the ceasefire agreement has little value.” In the photo: Livni (r.) with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin yesterday.
