Tunnel for terror attack uncovered

On Sunday of this week, as a result of intelligence gathered by the Israel Defense Forces and ISA, security forces were able to uncover a tunnel that had been dug from within the Gaza Strip near the Karni crossing. According to intelligence information, the tunnel was intended to be used to carry out a large scale terror attack at the Karni crossing itself. The entrance to the tunnel was found inside a house in the residential area of Sajaiya, east of Gaza City. IDF forces are operating in order to collapse the tunnel.

The Karni crossing has been intermittently closed over the past months due to numerous security alerts that terror organizations intended to carry out an attack there. Since the Karni crossing is one of the main lifelines of the Palestinian population, allowing the passage of merchandise and medical supplies in and out of the Gaza Strip, it remains a target of terror organizations whose intent is to weaken the Palestinian economy. The targeting of these crossings by terror organizations is considered to be “a cynical exploitation of the Israeli effort to ease the daily lives of Palestinian civilians who are not involved in terror activity,” according to the IDF Spokesman.

The IDF Spokesman also said that “despite the uncovering of this particular tunnel, the threat of terror against the crossing still exists.”
