US, EU condemn Israeli settlement plans

The American administration delivered an official protest to Israel in response to the Ministry of Housing’s planned construction of 690 apartments in the Jewish settlements of Ma’ale Addumim, and Beitar I’lit.
The administration said in the letter that the United States was “extremely troubled” by the new construction in the settlements due to the negative message it sends.
A senior US official said it is odd that the government is planning to invest money in this building project while it complains about a lack of budget and plans to ask the US for emergency funding to finance the Lebanon war.
The European Union has condemned the contracts. Finland, the current president of the EU, said in a statement that the construction in the settlements goes against the Geneva Convention and the EU is calling on Israel to cancel the contracts and freeze building in the settlements.
