An Israel Defense Forces tracker was killed yesterday during an operation to detect tunnel digging around the Kissufim crossing in Gaza. A tunnel was discovered in the area and is currently being investigated by engineering forces.
The soldier, a senior tracker from a Bedouin town in the Negev was killed when terrorists ambushed the force and managed to take his weapon and other personal belongings. The operation uncovered a tunnel shaft 10 meters deep, and a small cache of assault weapons and explosive devices.
The killing of the tracker, who was due to retire from service today, marks the first IDF casualty within Gaza since the Disengagement more than a year ago. The killing of the two soldiers during the raid on Kerem Shalom, during which Cpl. Gilad Shalit was kidnapped, was done entirely within Israeli territory.
