Syrian Authorities declare war on the Israeli mango

Friday, September 15, 2006 |  by Staff Writer
Syrian Customs authorities thwarted an attempt this week to smuggle a large delivery of Israeli mangoes on their way to the markets of Damascus, said the Syrian publication, al-Thawra.
According to the report, Syrian customs officials “ambushed” the refrigerated truck that carried large amounts of fruits and vegetables from Jordan. The forbidden fruit was found concealed inside the truck. The mangoes were removed from the truck and sent to be destroyed .
This is not the first time the Israeli mango, known for its vibrant taste, has drawn the wrath of the Arabs. A year ago, in the struggle for normalization by the opposition parties in Jordan, professional unions called on the public to ban the purchase of mangoes from Israel. They also called on the government to prevent the entrance of the forbidden fruit to the kingdom.
