A delegation from the European Union, which was due to arrive in Beirut to assess the damages from the war, has cancelled its visit because Lebanon refused the entry of an Israeli Knesset Member into the country. The refused MK is Deputy Knesset Chair Majalli Whbee (Kadima).
The delegation, which included parliament members from European countries, was due to visit Lebanon on behalf of the “Euromed” program to increase cooperation between European countries and the Middle East. During the last meeting of Euromed’s Parliamentary Committee, a decision was made to launch a delegation to Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority. Deputy Chair of the committee, MK Whbee, asked to join the mission to Lebanon based on the Barcelona Protocol calling for open cooperation. Whbee said that “I asked to join the delegation based on the Barcelona Protocols which should not be broken.”
The cancellation of the visit in Lebanon was preceded by deliberations by MK Whbee with Israeli Ambassador to the EU Oded Eran and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee, who stressed the importance of the Barcelona Protocols, saying that activities are open to all members.
The President of the European Parliament, who left for talks with top officials in the Lebanese government in Beirut, raised the issue of allowing the Israeli MK to enter Lebanon. The officials, however, did not grant the request.
Ultimately, the trip to Lebanon was postponed because the Lebanese government did not allow MK Whbee to take part in the delegation.
