Bashar Assad hosting a known terrorist in his home

Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres (photo) said that Syrian President Bashar Assad is hosting a known terrorist, Khaled Mashaal, in his home thereby preventing any diplomatic progress between Israel and the Palestinians and that is blocking the release of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, which even the Hamas government has agreed to.

"If his father, Hafez Assad, would have come to Camp David with Egyptian President Anwar Sadaat, the Golan Heights would have already been in his hands.” “The Syrians are refusers of peace,” said Peres at a conference of Jewish organizations in London on Wednesday night.

Peres also said that the war in Lebanon was not only a confrontation between Israel and Hizballah, but part of an Iranian attempt to create a Shiite hegemony in the Middle East. "The combination of nuclear capability and religious fanaticism is a danger to the entire world."

Peres added that Israel supports a Palestinian state which will live peacefully next to Israel, but will not turn over territory that will turn into a launching ground for missiles against Israel.
