Closure on West Bank, Gaza for Sukkot holiday

Sunday, October 08, 2006 |  by Staff Writer

Because of the Sukkot holiday and numerous threats of terror attacks, Israel has imposed a complete closure of the West Bank and Gaza and has raised its level of alert for the holiday.

The closure was imposed Friday morning and will last the entire week of the Sukkot holiday, allowing only humanitarian traffic and workers with permits to enter Israel during that period.

Israeli Police and the security system have also raised their alert level for the coming days because of numerous alerts of terror attacks planned against Israeli targets during the holiday.

The decisions to raise the alert level and to impose the closure were recommended by the security establishment and were decided by the political echelon out of a concern for a possible escalation in violence by terror groups.
