In light of the recent talks and legislative suggestions on changing the governing system in Israel, the Israel Democracy Institute has initiated an outdoor ad campaign titled “Presidential regime – a dangerous gamble! Parliamentary reform – a smart fix.”
The purpose of the campaign is to stop the danger of a presidential regime in Israel and is designed to garner the support of public opinion leaders and the general public to get behind the Knesset members, where the future of democracy is an existential issue for them.
The Israel Democracy Institute is supporting the efforts of the chairman of the Knesset’s Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee Prof. Menahem Ben-Sasson from Kadima to strengthen the reform. President of the IDI Prof Arik Carmon said on Sunday that “the proposals which are being worked on in the President’s Committee to examine the governing system in Israel are in line with the efforts of MK Ben-Sasson and mark the direction we must continue taking.”
He added that “the research of the institute over the past 15 years has been based on these proposals. The experts in the institute indicate a need to make changes in the electoral system, strengthening the professional infrastructure of the Knesset, structural changes in the roles of the government and mainly, taking steps to regain public support of national politics. All these will be achieved in a controlled and careful process over time.”
Professor Carmon also said that “the Israeli democracy needs some smart changes which will increase its stability and its governing ability, not a magic solution out of nowhere. After the previous gamble of voting separately for the Knesset and the Prime Minister, which its devastating affects we still feel today, we need to discard this attempt of ‘Russian roulette’ from the agenda.”
