Israel: North Korean nuke test might encourage Iran

Israel has officially joined the international condemnation of North Korea’s nuclear test yesterday calling it provocative and irresponsible and expressed concern that it will encourage Iran to accelerate its nuclear development plans.

Israel’s foreign ministry officially responded to the test and released a statement saying that “the test is an irresponsible and provocative act that could pose a serious threat to the regional stability of northeast Asia and to global and international security. Israel reiterates its call to continue the moratorium on nuclear tests and expects North Korea to stop any action that would worsen the situation. Israel also calls on the international community to firmly implement UNSC resolutions adopted to deal with WMD and the proliferation threat.”

Senior political officials in Jerusalem have expressed their concern that the test will encourage Iran to accelerate its nuclear development plans when it knows the international community is not able to stop a country from arming itself with nuclear weapons like North Korea, even if they are isolated and under sanctions. The officials also expressed concern that North Korea will transfer nuclear knowledge and technology to Iran.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Gillerman said that "even a nation such as China understands that what is happening with North Korea is the 'coming soon' occurrence in Iran, and we must not let that happen."

A senior official said yesterday that “this is a bad development in all aspects. When the axis of evil gets stronger, Israel should be worried as well.”

In Israel officials are hopeful that following the North Korean test, the world will show determination to deal with the Iranian threat before it reaches nuclear capabilities like North Korea has displayed.
