Israel satisfied with North Korea sanctions

Israel has expressed its satisfaction with the UN Security Council’s decision to impose economic and military sanctions on North Korea in reaction to the nuclear test it conducted last week.

Israel sees great importance in the decision and regards it as an additional step in the right direction in the efforts of the international community to deal with the dangers of nuclear armament and its proliferation, with an emphasis on the Iranian threat.

“Israel sees great importance not only to the decision, but mostly to the determination and unified front of the international community to bring to its full implementation in a way which will bring North Korea to stop its nuclear and ballistic missile activities. It is important to remember that countries such as North Korea and Iran are closely watching the determination of the international community to take concrete steps against the dangers they pose,” a foreign ministry statement read.

Officials at the foreign ministry say that the nuclear test conducted by North Korea emphasizes the need for an urgent, determined, unified, and aggressive effort of the international community to quickly implement resolution 1696 designed to stop the Iranian nuclear program, which maintains strategic ties with North Korea on issues such as material and technology transfer in the area of ballistic missiles.

Israeli ambassador to the UN Danny Gillerman praised the decision which shows a consensus among the international community about how it sees the North Korea test. Gillerman, however, also expressed his concern from the slow fashion in which the decision was reached. “The decision is a compromise and I am worried about the message it sends to Iran who is determined to use nuclear weapons.”

Gillerman added that the way the Security Council acted is not an encouraging sign towards a similar decision on the Iranian issue which is supposed to take place in the next few days.
