Israel complains to UN about Iran

Israel handed an official complaint to the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly against Iran for the statements of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (photo) who said this week that the end of Israel is near.

The complaint included several quotes from Ahmadinejad’s statements. Israel is claiming that the statements are a major violation of international law and go against the UN charter. Article 2 of the UN charter stipulates that all members of the UN are obligated to refrain from threatening the political independence of another country and promises to prove it is a peace-loving state who acts with tolerance.

In the complaint, Israel claims that there is no doubt that the repeated statements of the Iranian president are inconsistent with the basic principles of the UN charter and the moral spirit of the organization and severely hurts regional stability and international security.

The complaint was passed to the Japanese ambassador to the UN, who is the temporary president of the Security Council, to Secretary General Kofi Annan, and to the President of the General Assembly, Ambassador Haya Rashed Al-Khalifa of Bahrain. The complaint was also distributed to all members of the Security Council and General Assembly.

Reactions in Israel to the Iranian issue and the international response are also on the rise. A day after Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres said that there is a need to relate to Ahmadinejad as Hitler, cabinet minister Yitzhak Cohen (Shas) is also comparing the Iranian threat to the Holocaust. “The silence of the world at this time is shockingly similar to the silence of the sounds of the freight trains in the 1930s,” he said, referring to the trains which transported millions of Jews to their death during the Holocaust.

According to Cohen, there are countries around the world that enjoy seeing the Iranian efforts to destroy Israel. “We must not be silent. It is Israel’s duty to do anything possible to block the Iranian bomb – including everything,” he said.
