Prime Minister Ehud Olmert spoke yesterday in front of a conference in Tel Aviv and said that it is impossible that a leader of a nation who is member of the United Nations who is calling for the annihilation of another people, to be accepted as a legitimate leader.
In reference to the Holocaust, Olmert said that the same mistakes that were made 60 years ago by ignoring the threats of leaders must not be repeated. “We must not repeat the same mistakes that were made 60 years ago, of distraction, haphazardness, and ignorance of what was said when there was still a chance to save something. We will say these words to anyone at anytime: we cannot ignore these things. The responsible, moral, and conscious world cannot continue living with such a reality where a leader of a country is saying that there is a need to erase off the map another nation who is part of the United Nations like Israel,” Olmert said.
Olmert added that the struggle against the Iranian nuclear threat is not only Israel’s struggle, but belongs to the whole world. “We will keep ourselves busy day and night preventing Iran from turning into a nuclear power because of reasons that cannot be mistaken,” he said
Defense Minister Amir Peretz also referred to the Iranian threat in his speech at the Tel Aviv conference and said that “Israel’s silent action policy has resulted in the fact that the world now sees Iran as a global threat and not only to Israel.”
Peretz also hinted, in regard to the joining of Avigdor Lieberman to the government as a “minister for strategic planning,” that it would be wrong to politicize the Iranian threat. “The Iranian threat is not a political or partisan issue. The Iranian threat is a national issue of the highest priority, and it will be a mistake for Israel to turn the issue to an Israeli issue,” Peretz said.
