, with a petition calling for the immediate release of the three kidnapped soldiers, Gilad Shalit, Ehud Goldwasser, and Eldad Regev.
As part of an annual exchange program to the United States, the project consisted of gathering 1,800 signatures from students throughout Israel and Boston. The petition called on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to take action in influencing world leaders and to do everything in his power to bring the three soldiers home.
The petition read: “The United Nations has the stated objective of caring for the wellbeing of the world’s citizens. We ask you to use your influence with leaders of the world to implement international conventions with regard to the prisoners Ehud, Eldad and Gilad. We ask in every way, please ease the suffering of the families and find proof of life from their loved ones.”
Gillerman said in a meeting that the release of the abducted soldiers is top priority of the Israeli delegation in the UN and the subject is stressed in all meetings.
Gillerman promised to pass the signatures along to Annan and expressed hope that in time they will receive some sign of life from the soldiers.
The high school in Haifa lost a teacher to shock, and many students suffered from shock as a result of the missile attacks on Haifa during the recent war with Lebanon.
Students believe that with increased public pressure they will be able to influence world leaders.
