Defense Minister Amir Peretz spoke with German Defense Secretary Franz Josef Jung and made it clear that reports of Israeli Air Force missiles attacking a German ship off the coast of Lebanon were false.
The reports came when the German daily, Der Tagesspiegel, quoted the defense ministry in Berlin as seeing two Israeli F-16 fighter jets flying low over the German ship, firing two shots.
Shortly after the report was published Peretz stressed that Israel was not involved in any shooting of a German vessel and that there was no intention to carry out attacks in the future. He also emphasized the need to enhance cooperation and communication directly through UNIFIL.
While there were jets in Israeli airspace, shooting towards German vessels never occurred.
Germany assumed command of a United Nations naval force off the coast of Lebanon 10 days ago, sending a force of eight ships and 1,000 service personnel to join the international peace forces in the region.
The naval force attempts to prevent weapons smuggling and helps maintain a cease-fire between Israel and the Hizballah terrorist organization.
