While homosexuals around the world are slated to gather in Jerusalem on November 10 for the World Gay Pride Parade, the ultra-Orthodox of Israel are setting the stage to hold mass protests to sabotage the parade.
United Torah Judaism, the alliance of two ultra-orthodox political parties in the Israeli government, is leading the campaign and plans protests through the crowded King George Street along the parade route.
An expected 250,000 people are to join the demonstration and plan to march from the Western Wall to the center of town where a majority of spectators and marchers will pass through.
“The minute we decide on a course of action, the issue will be passed on to rabbis for approval,” said Member of Knesset (parliament) Meir Porush.
The day before the march, the ultra-Orthodox sect will commemorate the death of their radical rabbi, Meir Kahane, who was assassinated in New York 16 years ago.
Organizers, who plan on doing everything possible to stop the parade including blocking roads, have recruited settler youths and even Arabs to join the demonstration.
Shas has remained silent on the matter and activists are calling on spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, to call for a demonstration.
