Ptittim is still often called "Ben Gurion rice" in Israel. During the years soon after the establishment of the State of Israel, she suffered a rice shortage. The first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, asked Eugene Propper, one of the founders of the Israeli food company "OSEM", to develop an alternative.
Given the abundance of wheat grown in Israel, Ptittim was born!
Today Ptittim and Couscous are still the most popular accompaniments to meat, chicken & fish dishes!
