Ptittim is still often called "Ben Gurion rice" in Israel. During the years soon after the establishment of the State of Israel, she suffered a rice shortage. The first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, asked Eugene Propper, one of the founders of the Israeli food company "OSEM", to develop an alternative.
Given the abundance of wheat grown in Israel, Ptittim was born!
