Like Jaffa oranges, the hats known in Israel as “kova tembel” - literally “idiot hats” - became an Israeli trademark. The name comes from the Hebrew word for "fool", because only "foolish people were thought to build a new national home in a devastated country like Israel". From the founding of the state until the 1970s, Israeli "Sabras" - native born Israelis - men and women alike wore these hats.

The hats came to symbolize the Israeli kibbutz field workers. They worked the fields wearing these hats simply because other hats did not exist. Even foreign volunteers on kibbutzim and tourists proudly wore these hats.

We are offering our readers these bucket hats especially for Israel's 70th anniversary.
