The story of the Ethiopian community in Israel can be described as the best and saddest among the patchwork of Israel's communities.

Ethiopians Celebrate Their Heritage

As Africans, it is not easy for Ethiopians to absorb into Israel's east-meets-west culture. Now young Ethiopians can celebrate their heritage at the Malkat Shva Ethiopian Cultural Center in Jerusalem.

The center was established by Tracey Shipley as a place for these young immigrants to explore and share their own culture through dance, music, and theater. Not only does the project encourage a sense of pride in Ethiopian Israelis but through performance, all Israelis can learn about and enjoy Ethiopian culture.

This summer, if funds allow, the Center also plans to teach traditional fine arts and singing to young Ethiopian Israeli children at a summer camp.

As Ethiopians were persecuted for many years before Aliyah, most have had to begin a new life in Israel with the minimum of financial resources.
