Pnina Tamano-Shata became the first Ethiopian woman elected to the Knesset, Israel's Parliament, on January 22nd. But many in her community still struggle to integrate into Israeli society.
On January 22nd, Yair Lapid's Yesh Atid party won 19 seats in the next Knesset, Israel's Partiament. Number 14 on his list is Pnina Tamano-Shata, who was brought to Israel with her family in 1984 during Operation Moses, when Israel brought the Jewish Ethiopian community home. Pnina worked tirelessly to pay her way through school and pledges to help integrate the Ethiopian community better into Israeli society.
Not all Ethiopians in Israel are as lucky as Pnina. Because of the cultural and ethnic differences that the Ethiopians bring with them when they immigrate, it is more challenging for many of them to adjust to the mix of Western and Middle Eastern life in Israel. It is also difficult for many of them to find work and provide for their families.
