The 19th Maccabiah Games took place in Israel during the last two weeks of July. An estimated 9,000 athletes from 72 countries participated in the games, with 20,000 tourists watching the third-largest sporting event in the world.
The Jewish National Fund (JNF) is a co-sponsor of the event. JNF's Chief of Protocol Andy Michelson said, "This is one of the many ways that the JNF serves as a bridge between the Diaspora and Israel." Team Canada took up the invitation of a day at JNF's Nachshon Forest Tree Planting Center in Israel's central region. Tree planting began after two young Canadians read the Planter's Prayer in both Hebrew and English. Cori Marshall, on the Canadian Girls Basketball Team, said, "It's really very cool to plant a tree in Israel. It's not only the first time I've planted a tree in Israel, it's the first time I've planted a tree anywhere!"
